17th February 2010:

NEXT STOP FOR BUDDING FILM MAKERS: Year 8 pupil Matthew Stubberfield from Aghalee with Lucy McCullagh, Manager at Wheelworks launch Translink’s brand new school initiative, a competition running in conjunction with Wheelworks, a youth arts organisation that supports the artistic and cultural development of young people.
Translink has launched a brand new safety competition in conjunction with local schools, community groups and Wheelworks, a youth arts organisation that supports the artistic, social and cultural development of young people.
The initiative, targeted to Year 8 pupils, will offer groups the opportunity to make their own short safety film. To enter, young people will work together in teams to develop a story board with a rail safety theme. The winning three story boards and their teams will then get to work with an artist and filmmaker to see their ideas brought to life as they get to make their own short film.
Translink Communications Manager, Lynda Shannon explained, ‘Safety is our top priority and we are always looking at new ways to reach out to the local community. This is a great way to get young people to really think about rail safety in new way. The use of film is also a very innovative approach which we hope will give young people a unique opportunity to produce short films which will speak in the right tone of voice to their peers and friends.
“We are delighted to be working with Wheelworks on this project. Using the latest equipment, winning teams will be able to film, produce and edit their own work with completed films posted to the Translink website throughout the summer where friends and family will be able to vote for their favourite.
“We want everyone to get safety smart, particularly as the days start to get longer which often means our young people are out and about much more. This competition is part of our ongoing campaign to raise awareness and promote responsible behaviour on and around public transport and we look forward to receiving entries from young people across Northern Ireland and hope that the ‘rail safety’ theme inspires many creative minds.’
The closing date for storyboard entries is March 30th at 5pm. Workshops will take place from April to June. The winning team will be announced and awarded travel prizes in September.
Lucy McCullagh, WheelWorks Manager said ‘We are encouraging all parents, teachers and local community groups to get young people involved in this fantastic initiative. Programmes like these help young people think about serious issues in a creative way, while learning new skills and helping express themselves through digital art.’
