Passengers travelling in the Newry area can now enjoy the benefits of six new modern high capacity Ulsterbus vehicles that can each carry up to 62 passengers and will replace older retiring vehicles.

Transport Minister, Conor Murphy said: "I welcome the improvement to local bus services that this investment will bring. Their arrival is part of the roll-out of 60 new buses representing an overall £8.5 million upgrade investment in Ulsterbus services across the North, funded by my Department."

"Since April 2008 I have assisted Translink to purchase 158 new buses costing £22m. By the end of next year this should rise to 200 buses which has greatly improved accessibilty and the average age of the fleet."

Greg McLaughlin, Service Delivery Manager – Newry, Translink, said the vehicles have been specifically designed with an emphasis on safety, comfort and the environment:

“This £850,000 investment marks another milestone in the transformation of bus services in the Newry area and demonstrates our commitment to improving services for our passengers. We are confident that, in conjunction with attractive good value ticket options, more people will be encouraged to use Ulsterbus.”

The 12 metres long single-deck buses feature clever use of space to cater for a higher number of passengers while retaining high levels of comfort and convenience. Each bus has a dedicated side door with lift for easy wheelchair access. They also incorporate 3-point integral seatbelts, PA and CCTV system, reverse warning system and meet the latest European legislation for emissions standards.

Translink Ulsterbus is also currently offering Newry passengers using the 238/238A Goldline service cheaper travel to and from Belfast until March 25 with a ‘third-off’ day return travel after 9.30am, Monday to Thursday.
